CSA week 5

After work/school mojitos on Friday night:

Peas from the CSA last week. They might not look like much, but boy were they good! Eaten raw on our "porch" (metal/concrete balcony overlooking the parking lot) before dinner:

CSA week 5:

Scallions, kale, baby arugula, basil, yogurt, zucchini, and raw milk cheese. Not pictured: ground turkey. We bought the strawberries separately, and also picked up some bison burgers on my SIL's recommendation. I'll let you know how those turn out once we make them.

Last night we went to see Once. I must have been in a sappy mood, this one really affected me and I think I'd like to see it again, which is unusual for me. It's the story of an irish musician and a Czech immigrant who record an album together over the course of a few days in Dublin. The two main characters are musicans in real life and wrote/performed all of the songs in the film. Apparently the original plan was to cast Cillian Murphy in the lead and have him lip sync to Glen Hansards music - thank god they decided to cast Hansard himself, he makes the movie. I'm thinking about buying The Swell Season, I thought it was really beautiful.
Here's a review if you're interested.

Have a look

Some of R.'s photos from our trip on his flickr site

We're home! We had such a great trip... I think I only managed to wait ~2 days before asking R. how/when we could move back to CA. The weather, the lifestyle, the abundance of fresh fruit/veggies - I love it.

Cactus near Monterey Bay

Tide Pools near Half Moon Bay

Winery tour in Paso Robles

Muesli/morning bun from Tartine (xoxo)

Lavender at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market

This was the first time we had been to the Ferry Building since it was renovated, and I was really impressed. Lots of great vendors, and a nice farmer's market on Saturday.

We completely lucked out in the lodging department: The loft at Zanaida Cellers had an amazing view, washer/dryer, huge kitchen etc and ended up costing $125/night/couple. Highly highly recommended. Our room at The Mosser in SF was tiny but mod and had lots of energy saving extras. Loved it.

We also enjoyed a couple of restaurants in Paso Robles:

Matthew's on Spring
Deborah's room at Justin

Our last 2.5 days were in SF, just the two of us, and afterwards we realized that we only tried one new restaurant, instead concentrating on old favorites:

Ti Couz for savory and sweet crepes
Tartine oh how I love thee Tartine bakery
Mifune An old standby - I always get the kitsune udon
Myth A pleasant surprise, considering the mixed reviews.
Park Chow For comfort food
Goat Hill Pizza In our old neighborhood, Potrero Hill.

Crap weather camping take 2

What is camping with the Lipcans without massive thunderstorms?

Boring. That's what.

Friday night was relatively clear; the heaviest rain appeared 1. During dinner preparation on Saturday night and 2. When it was time to pack up on Sunday morning.

We managed to get a nice fire going though

D+E by the lake. We had to evacuate soon after.

Nothing comes between us and a hearty meal!

I suppose I should stop with the foot photos, but I do believe this one accurately conveys our weekend weather situation:

R. and Dan were able to do their hike/bird watching on Sunday morning, so that was good.
We're leaving on Friday for CA!!! Can't wait. We made a reservation here for next Friday - a belated b-day gift to R. We'll be in Pacifica visiting family from Friday-Sunday, then down to Paso Robles with my in-laws for wine tasting and relaxation. Then just the two of us in SF from Thursday-Sunday. We've decided to not rent a car and just hang out in the city. It's always wierd going back to where we used to live... always bittersweet because I loved it there and I know we'll never move back (for a variety of reasons). Unless we do so when we retire.
Here are a few of my most favorite restaurants from way back when:
Udon at Mifune
Pizza at Goat Hill (Potrero Hill)
Brunch at Ella's
Tapas at Thirsty Bear
Park Chow in the Sunset
The Station House Cafe in Point Reyes (where we got engaged)
Everything at Tartine Bakery
Dinner/movies at Foreign Cinema
I could easily go on and on...
